Announcing Dr. Dolata’s New Book: Tablature, Europe, 1300–1750

Did you know that there are over 40 types of tablature and counting? Or that from 1300 to 1750, tablature was one of the main, or in many cases, the only type of notation for solo instrumental music? Or that composers such as J.S. Bach, Schutz, Buxtehude, Monteverdi, and Palestrina were well-versed in its use?

Over the course of 1000+ pages, Tablature, Europe, 1300–1750 explains all this through 435 essays with transcriptions, and 904 full-color facsimiles and illustrations, by 30 leading player/scholars from Australia, Austria, Brazil, Catalonia, Chile, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States, making it an indispensable resource for anyone curious about how music was actually written and played in the early modern era.

Under the auspices of the Centre d’Etudes Supérieures de la Renaissance at the Université François-Rabelais de Tours—CNRS, FIU Professor of Musicology David Dolata co-edited the volume and wrote or co-wrote 100+ of the essays and produced 54 of the transcriptions.

If you are interested in the book, there is a discount for ordering before September 15, 2026. See the link below for more details:

Il Furioso releases Handel CD

We are pleased to announce that Professor of Musicology David Dolata and his group Il Furioso, have just released their third CD on the London record label Toccata Classics: George Frideric Handel, The complete ‘Amen, Alleluia Arias, HWV 269–77 with music by Church, Croft, Pittoni, and Anon.

This project was funded by an FIU Humanities grant and CARTA in collaboration with Boston University’s Center for Early Music Studies. Each of the recording’s 22 tracks is a first recording. According to Toccata Classics’ press release:

And would you believe that there was some unrecorded Handel? These nine ‘Amen, Alleluja’ arias use just those words as the basis for virtuoso vocal display – and when sung by a true male soprano, as here, the effect is electrifying.

Also performing on the CD is FIU School of Music faculty member Juvenal Correa-Salas. The recording is available in multiple formats at https://toccataclassics.com/product/handel-amen-alleluia-arias/?mc_cid=57a35f49a1&mc_eid=5e19fa81d5
